Let’s Talk Training Thursday: Race Day

Let's-Talk-Training-Thursday2

The timing of this post could not be more fitting as we are talking about the essentials and mental prep for the big race day and I am prepping myself mentally and packing for my second half marathon in just three days. This will be my first time essentially traveling for a race. I’m excited yet nervous at the same time. Will I forget something? Will I still get a good nights sleep not being in my own bed? It’s little thoughts like these that creep into my head from time to time.

I’ve already begun to pull essentials I’ll need, like my visor, race belt, fuel (I plan to use my trusty SportBeans and my recent love for PowerGel), inhaler, compression sleeves, etc. setting them off to the side so I don’t forget them in the process of packing. I’m grateful my training plan from RunFit365 included a Race Day Checklist to ensure I don’t forget even the most basic essentials.

Tonight after work I will go for a massage to help unwind and loosen up my muscles. I’ve had some of my best training runs after a massage so I am hoping the massage will be in my favors for a PR. I’m also thinking of getting some yoga in Saturday morning before we hit the road to help relax the body some from all the excitement, lol.

Mentally I feel pretty confident. I followed my training plan closely and did a great deal of long distance and speed workouts, completing my last workout the morning. At this point there is not one thing I regret not doing or wish I had done differently in my training. I plan to take the same mental approach that I do in my training runs by breaking the race up into 5K intervals.

I have briefly looked over the course map just so I have a general idea of what is coming, it appears to be a flat course and you will run a great distance and then turn back around to the start/finish line. I’ve heard its bad luck to study the course and who knows maybe some surprises on not know what to expect on the course can keep things interesting for the race. 🙂

What tips do you have for running a race out of town?

  1. You’re going to do so great, I’m so excited for you! I wish I could have been there to cheer you on and do the 5k, but this injury didn’t allow it. I’ll be following along on social media to keep up with your progress though!!
