This week I am back linking up with Jill, Jessica and the rest of the fit family for Tuesday’s The Fit Dish Link Up!
The [optional] topic for this weeks discussion are tips to ‘Healthify Your Vacation.’
Tip #1: Get a hotel room with a mini fridge and microwave. This can be very beneficial in that you can either bring your own food, yogurt, cheese, fruit for breakfast, lunch or whatever it may be. Many hotels offer a continental breakfast but those typically consist of many sugary items and lack a source of protein.
Tip #2: Pack snacks. If and when you’re hungry, you’re hungry…and if you’re like me the term “hangry” can be applied to describe you. To avoid the hangry monster, have snacks with you at any and all times. While on vacation you may not necessarily be on your same eating routine. Having snacks on hand help curb the temptations to give in to that popcorn you smell at the cart in the theme park.
Tip #3: Smaller portions. Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you can cheat your meal plan here and there. At the same time though, it is crucial not to give into the temptation to over indulge. Enjoy the food, just in moderation, order a smaller portion or split your plate with a family member.
Tip #4: Bring a workout outfit, or two. Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you should skip your daily workouts for the week. Often times, the hotels will either have a gym or the concierge can provide you with a local running route. Or you never know, maybe there is a scenic hike trail you stumble upon on your drive from the airport to the hotel.
Tip #5: Hydrate. Hydration is a key requirement. Traveling alone can dehydrate you, not to mention vacationing on the beach, soaking up sun or staying at a cabin on higher, drier altitudes. When ever I get to my destination I always stop and pick up a pack of water for the room. If I am going to a theme park, I’ll bring a reusable water bottle to refill at water fountains.
How do you stay healthy while on vacation?

Thank you for the share!
Packing snacks is a must. By the way, I noticed a Chocolate Mint Quest bar in your snack bag lol, how are they? I moved to the UK and you have to order them online, but they are so expensive and you can’t just buy one. I love most of the other ones but mint chocolate can by iffy… 🙂
I agree Erin. The Mint Chocolate Chip bar is delicious! The mint isn’t too overpowering and it comes in my top 3 favorites. I like to pop my bars in the microwave for less than :30 and it is so good, especially the chocolate chip cookie dough and the cookies and cream! I think as long as you like mint chocolate chip it’s worth a try. Sorry to hear you have to buy them in bulk. Have you looked at Amazon for a variety pack? I know the mint is a relatively new flavor so it may not come in a variety just yet.
Great tips! I love packing all sorts of snacks with me whenever I go anywhere (since I’m constantly hungry…). It saves me a lot of money, and I don’t have to resort ot eating junk! 😀
Thanks Farrah! I hear ya. food at the hotel can be expensive and you don’t know what ingredients are made to use it. Plus they may not carry your brand of power bars…Even when I am at home, if I am out running errands, Ill bring a power bar and a bottle of water, just in case 🙂
All great tips Krystal! The mini fridge and microwave are the first things we check when making hotel reservations then whether or not they have a fitness center. Thanks for sharing with the fitfam!
Thank you Jill!
I love finding new places to run so I always bring my running gear with me. It’s part of the fun of vacation for me! 🙂
That’s a good one Melanie! Being healthy and active while on vacation is almost like a fun little challenge to see how creative you can be in staying active and eating right, yet still have fun!
It is!! I feel like if I get at least a run in a day then I’m in the clear to live it up! 🙂
Hydration…. YES! The first thing I notice if I dont drink enough water when I travel is chapped lips. It is weird!
Yes, same here, I think with the climate change in certain parts of the country dries your skin.
